What Magnet Holds 10, 25, 50 or 100 lb? Magnets by Pull Force

A magnet's listed pull force is the most it holds in a straight pull off thick, flat steel with full contact. Our 344 magnets with a supplier value list 0.4 lb to 507.1 lb; 540 more without supplier data show a calculated estimate, marked approx. Choose one rated well above your load: real holding force is lower because of air gaps, paint, thin steel and sideways (shear) loads.

This chart has two kinds of value, always in separate columns:

  • Supplier value: the pull force from our suppliers' data, as listed on the product page.
  • Calculated estimate (approx.): for magnets without supplier data. We calculated it from the magnet's grade and dimensions, based on our supplier values for magnets of the same shape. It's a rough guide only: real holding force varies and can differ from the estimate, so test before relying on it. On the product page it's labelled "Pull force (calculated estimate)". An estimate never replaces a supplier value.

Values in lb are converted at 1 kg = 2.20462 lb and rounded to 0.1 lb. Fishing magnets are listed separately below. Two supplier values are held back from this chart while we check them with the supplier. Pot, hook and eyebolt magnets have supplier values only.

How pull force is measured, and why your magnet will hold less

Pull force, whether a supplier value or a calculated estimate, is an indicative value: the force needed to pull the magnet straight off a flat, polished steel plate that's thick enough not to limit the result, with the full surface in contact, at room temperature. Supplier values are laboratory values measured under ideal conditions, and our estimates describe the same ideal case. In real applications, the holding force is lower, often considerably. It drops with:

  • An air gap: paint, powder coating, rust, dirt, tape, labels, a sheet of paper or a rubber coating all act as a gap. Even a fraction of a millimetre makes a noticeable difference.
  • Thin steel: thin sheet metal can't absorb the full field, so a strong magnet holds much less than on a thick plate.
  • The type of steel: mild steel works best; cast iron and alloyed or hardened steel give less. Most stainless steels (304, 316) are barely magnetic or not at all.
  • A sideways (shear) load: the listed force applies to a straight pull. On a vertical steel wall the magnet slides off at a much lower force. Rubber-coated magnets resist sliding better.
  • Heat, vibration and shocks: a warmer magnet is weaker, and vibration, shocks or repeated loading can make it let go well below its rated force.

Test the magnet in your actual application and allow a generous safety margin. Don't use magnets on their own to hold loads above people, or anywhere failure could cause injury or damage, unless the design has been checked and tested by a qualified person. More detail: magnet pull force explained and magnet technical data.

Safety: strong magnets can pinch fingers and skin, and can chip or shatter if they snap together. Keep them away from pacemakers and other medical implants. Our products are not toys: keep small magnets out of the reach of children. See our magnet safety page.

Magnets made for holding loads

If you're hanging or fixing something, start with a magnet in a steel housing with a hook, eye or thread. The steel pot concentrates the magnetic field on the open face.

Type Magnets with a supplier value Supplier pull force Use
Hook magnets 14 11.2–211.6 lb hang items from a steel beam, grid or shelf
Eyebolt magnets 14 7.9–121.3 lb a ring to tie a rope, cable or chain to
Pot magnets (thread, countersunk or for gluing) 40 9.9–235.9 lb screw or bolt the magnet to your own fixture

Browse hook and eyebolt magnets, pot magnets, countersunk magnets and rubber-coated magnets (for painted surfaces and where sliding is the risk).

Examples in each pull-force range

For each range we show the lowest- and highest-rated magnet of each type, plus at least one supplier value and one calculated estimate where the type has both. Supplier values and calculated estimates are in separate columns. Every link goes to the live product page with its full specifications.

Fishing magnets

The figures below are the supplier's "up to" ratings for our fishing magnets: the most the magnet pulls under ideal test conditions (a straight pull off thick, flat, clean steel with full contact). In real use the holding force is lower, often considerably. Fishing magnets are made for pulling steel objects out of water, not for fixed mounting, so they aren't in the chart above.

Questions and answers

How much weight can a magnet hold?

As much as its listed pull force only in the ideal case: a straight pull off thick, flat, bare steel with full contact. In real use it holds less, often considerably less. Our supplier values run from 0.4 lb for a 3.175 mm sphere to 507.1 lb for an 80 x 80 x 40 mm block. Calculated estimates for magnets without supplier data run from approx. 0.3 lb to 352.7 lb.

How much weight can a neodymium magnet hold?

It depends on size, shape and grade much more than on the material alone. In our range, a Neodymium Disc Magnet 10 x 3 mm N48 lists 3.5 lb (1.6 kg) and a Neodymium Block Magnet 25 x 25 x 10 mm N48 lists 35.3 lb (16 kg), both under lab conditions.

Will a magnet rated 10 lb hold 10 lb on my wall?

Not reliably. On a vertical wall the load pulls sideways (shear), and the magnet slides off at a much lower force than its rating. Paint and thin steel reduce it further. Support heavy items from below, use more or larger magnets, choose rubber-coated magnets where sliding is the risk, and test with the real load.

Which magnetic hook holds 50 lb?

Hook magnets with a listed pull force above 50 lb start with the Rubber-Coated Hook Magnet 66 mm (59.5 lb) and the Neodymium Hook Magnet 32 x 10 x 9 mm N40 (63.9 lb). The strongest is the Neodymium Hook Magnet 60 x 18 x 10 mm N40 at 211.6 lb. Hook ratings are straight-pull values too, so allow a generous safety margin.

How strong a magnet do I need?

Pick one whose listed pull force is well above your load, then test it on your real surface. We don't publish a fixed safety factor because the reduction depends on the gap, steel, load direction and vibration in your application. Send us the details at info@magneticsolutions.net and we'll help you choose.

Why does my magnet hold less on my fridge or a steel cabinet?

Fridge doors and cabinets are thin, painted sheet steel. Thin steel can't absorb the full field, and paint acts as an air gap, so the hold is much lower than the listed value.

What does "approx., calculated" mean?

It marks a calculated estimate for a magnet without supplier pull-force data. We calculated it from the grade and dimensions, based on our supplier values for the same shape. Real holding force varies, so treat it as a rough guide and test in your application. Supplier values are shown separately and are never replaced by an estimate.

Is the pull force the same as gauss?

No. Surface field strength (gauss or mT) is the field at the magnet's surface. It isn't the same as pull force, which is what we list for holding.

Can I hang things overhead with magnets?

Not on magnets alone above people, or anywhere failure could cause injury or damage, unless the design has been checked and tested by a qualified person.
